Getting Live Writer to play nicely with Drupal

Getting Live Writer to play nicely with Drupal wasn't as easy as it seemed. When following the default setup all I was able to do was get the blog to connect. That meant I couldn't create other types of content (images, polls, pages etc) from Live Writer. I use the page content type for my non blog related posts, as I have family and friends etc who only want to read the personal blog entries and don't want all the technical guff I stick on here appearing in their RSS readers.

After a bit of Googling I found this comment on the Drupal website

Here are my revised instructions:

1. enable the blog module and the blog api module
2. enable the 'edit own blog' permission for the user role that is being used to post (Administer › User management › Access Control)
3. enable the 'article' content type for the blog api (Administer › Site Configuration › Blog APIs)

I followed these instructions, and then added these additional details:
do points 1 2 and 3 above. In 3 - enable other required content types - eg image, poll, story, page etc.
In live writer you will need to create a weblog account for each content type

so use these settings to do that.
Create new weblog account
enter your site url/xmlrpc.php and your user name and password
select wordpress and make sure the url path is http://www.yoursite.com/xmlrpc.php
select the content type for this weblog account
allow live writer to configure itself

repeat for each content type

Yeah fckeditor is pretty cool, as is tinymce. However they only work inside the blogging application as text editors on the site. Live Writer, and Airpress for MAC work as stand a lone applications that you can blog from and send the result to your blog without even opening a browser.

Thanks for the tips, I haven't used live writer before, I always going with manual updates to put content on blogs. I want to try the software but before I do that I need a guarantee that it won't cause me any troubles, I wouldn't enjoy losing an article because of it.

It certainly wont lose any of your articles for you - though you can download current articles and edit them.
the setup notes in here are slightly out of date - but the same general principle applies. use the wordpress site option for emulation when setting up.
Cheers
